ÄLA

ÄLA is a low-energy lighting solution with a focus on attention to detail to design and manufacture of high-quality affordable desk lighting..

ÄLA is built and prototyped with Ashdown Forest oak from a fallen tree, planed to the correct thicknesses, machined and laser cut to perfection.

The design was an experiment with high influence from the Memphis and Bauhaus design movements and was designed and prototyped for my GCSE coursework.

I believe that the striking contrast of red gloss acrylic to the oak is truly beautiful and could be a focal point of any room. The abstract design may not to be of everyone's taste but surely is a "discussion maker" no matter the owner. This is something I believe to be vital to any design

attention to detail

ÄLA is influenced by aviation

The concept began as a rough sketch in a notebook while on holiday. I was fascinated by plane wings and started laying these wing drawings on top of each other until this silhouette came about. I soon started playing with splashes of colour and how stripes of colour can transform an idea into a viable wanted product.

raw manufacture

I was also very keen not to hide any of the raw components of the lamp showing how they work and how the product is built including wires, nuts, screws and imperfections.I feel this gives the product character building an emotional attachment. This was very much the ideology of design in modernism.

hand crafted

Brass spacers, bolts and nuts are all crafted on a lathe with filed edges to

enhance grip for the user when adjusting the height of the swing arm.

A low energy 12v LED unit is used to project the light hardwired to a transformer and fuse.

The whole unit is able to be dissassembled for packaging or travel and is held together using standard self taping screws.

finished with red cord

The design is drawn together with red electrical cord. The bright cord ties the aesthetic of the top head with the contrasting lower body, stem and base creating a visual balance of light to dark colour.
